The European Patent Office (EPO) is responsible for granting European patents. The EPO’s collection of over 95 million patent documents from all over the world is available to the public via their free Espacenet service, available online.
Espacenet, the European Patent Office’s (EPOP) search database, offers free access to more that 80 million patent documents worldwide across multiple languages. The EPO had an urgent need for English-Portuguese Machine Translation to be deployed as a secure cloud service and deliver almost instant translations of end-user search results through the Espacenet interface.
The EPO had an urgent need for English-Portguese Machine Translation to be deployed as a secure cloud service and deliver almost instant translations of end-user search results through the Espacenet interface. They chose Iconic Translation Machines. The EPO required English-Portuguese Machine Translation which could be deployed securely as a cloud service for instant translations.
Over a six month period, Iconic worked with the team at the EPO to build and evaluate an English-Portuguese MT system which became the very first language of our IPTranslator solution used. The Iconic team created the system from scratch and delivered it through a beta version of what would later become the Iconic API. Iconic processed vast amounts of global requests from users of the EPO service while translating over 16 million words between both English and Portuguese.
